beatnik

beatnik
This term had something of a vogue in the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s. It is said to have been invented by Herb Caen, a San Francisco newspaper columnist. The beat generation was alienated from normal society, advocating the use of drugs, sexually free behaviour, a peripatetic life, and so on. The ‘-nik’ ending undoubtedly came from the Russian satellite Sputnik I, which was launched on 4 October 1957. The suffix was at least temporarily active, bringing words like ‘peacenik’ and even ‘Bachnik’ into being, meaning ‘one who is a devotee of’. The 1960s beatniks were distinguishable by their appearance, and may have been addressed by the term as suggested in The Sophomore, by Barry Spacks. There a man on a beach says to a young passer-by: ‘Hey, Beatnik, watch what you’re doing.’
